Community

Royal Randwick & Southern Courier Community Chest

Royal Randwick, along with centre Ambassador Sophie Falkiner, is aiming to make 2009 just that little bit easier on the finances for eight charities, sports or community groups, by establishing a community chest for their benefit.

The Royal Randwick Community Chest aims to assist during these hard economic times, by providing $1000 Prepaid Visa Card grants to groups that support, promote or keep the community active. There is a $1,000 Prepaid Visa Card grant to be awarded each month for eight months, from April until November…a total of $8,000!

“There’s a lot of talk around people and organisations’ tightening their financial belts in the coming year, so the Community Chest could be a welcome relief for many groups over the coming months,” said Sophie Falkiner, Ambassador for Royal Randwick.

Chris Seller, Centre Manager of Royal Randwick said “Our aim is to help eight community organisations over the next eight months through our Community Chest program. Royal Randwick is a key part of Randwick Community and we’re very happy to be able to support those groups that play a central role for the people that live here.”

How to apply for a Royal Randwick Community Chest grant

Groups should complete the 2009 Community Chest Application Form. Don’t forget to attach a letter or email to Royal Randwick outlining how a $1,000 grant will help your organisation in 2009.

Each month, $1,000 from the Royal Randwick community chest will be granted to an organisation and featured in The Southern Courier the following month. For more details including details on the monthly winner please visit www.southerncourier.com.au.

100 Views of Randwick

This year, Randwick’s community is celebrating 150 years of local government in the area. One of the many projects planned for the year is 100 Views Randwick, run in conjunction with author Libby Hathorn and artist, Pat Granville-Smith.

Through 100 Views, primary aged children are encouraged to look at their natural heritage from 100 different creative points of view, providing a ‘snapshot’ of their lives in the 21st century, whilst celebrating their community. Their resulting effort will leave a lasting body of work which will form part of Randwick’s sesquicentenary celebrations.

At the heart of this project is the celebration of community. Through 100 Views, students and their teachers are encouraged to look at their own community afresh and celebrate an aspect of it—‘the icon’—through poetry, artwork, the arts in general and in any other way they see fit. The four participating schools in Randwick have chosen Alison Park, Centennial Park and Dolphin Point as their icons.

The fantastic artwork will be on display at the centre until the end of October.
